The Amazing Spider-Man has been released and now that I’ve seen it, I’m getting very excited about the next one. But it’ll probably be at least a year before we know who is going to be in it, and I have a few ideas of what I’d love to see in the future of this new Spidey series.
10) Rhino
Strictly speaking, Rhino is a force of nature. He doesn’t think, he only acts. It would be great to see him used as a hired hand or even just as somebody for Spidey to fight at the opening of a film to start things off with a bang. There isn’t a whole lot you can do with the character and he’s not exactly the type to have a big plan, so I can’t imagine him holding a whole movie. Still, it would just be great to see him wrecking stuff and Spider-Man taking him down.
9) Chameleon
Spider-Man’s first foe, Chameleon is a shrewd master of disguise. He’s able to use his ability to disguise as anyone to fool Peter Parker into thinking he is a friend or loved one and he’s able to fool others into thinking he himself is Spider-Man. I’d be interested to see how this would work in a film, with a bit of a mystery-solving edge to it. Unfortunately there are also a lot of ways this could go wrong. He probably works best as a TV character where stories can either be short enough to keep the mystery tight or long enough to keep the suspense up.
8) Electro
Electro isn’t exactly an interesting or a memorable villain. I think the reason I like him so much though is that you just don’t get enough electric characters in comics. Electricity is a huge part of our lives today, so it would be interesting to see what he could do to people. It would also just be really nice to see somebody shooting electricity from their hands and not be some old guy in a horrible movie black robe.
7) Mysterio
Mysterio has always been one of my favorites but I don’t know why. I guess his connection to film and his delight in special effects is intriguing to me and it would be great to see that used in a movie. He’s been able to fool people into thinking he’s Spider-Man and has been able to bring Spidey to his knees quite a few times, if not the brink of insanity. I’d love to see a psychological villain go up against Spider-Man since he’s usually just punching people who are punching back.
6) Vulture
Vulture is pretty much the most ridiculous on this list. He’s not Peter’s brightest villain and he’s not the most physically competent. He has the most outlandish costume and he’s really just some old guy who robs banks. But what is great about this character is that he’s generally obscure, making it easy to come up with a great story to wrap around him or for him to wrap around. You also just can’t deny the incredible arial fights having a villain with flight would bring. The reason we go to see Spider-Man movies is to see him swinging from things and this guy would keep him swinging all over the place!
5) Green Goblin
I think it’s pretty safe to say that they’re setting this up to be allowed to happen in the future, and I’m all for that. His connection to Peter holds a lot of emotion, as do his rather infamous story lines. I’m not so sure if they’d go about it the way the comics did since they’ve changed so much, but whatever they do with the character I have complete faith in them.
4) Scorpion
Scorpion is in a lot of ways similar to Spider-Man. In fact, he even was Spider-Man for a short while. He’s just as strong and able to climb walls, but he also has the massive tail on his costume that he can use to hurl at the web-spinner. The original Scorpion has gone through a lot of costume changes and alter egos over time, so it would be interesting to see them put a character in that could show up in several movies in several ways. And as with Rhino, I just really want to see him on the big screen tearing up the city.
3) Shocker
An oddly overused villain in the Spider-Man video games, Shocker is an interesting character. He’s built a suit that deflects pretty much any sort of physical attack using high frequency waves, so Spidey has to use his smarts to take him down. I’d love to see what they could do with the suit to make it look more realistic and scientifically plausible, and I’d love to see Peter have to learn just how to defeat the guy. I don’t know exactly if he could hold a whole movie on his own, but if he could then that would be pretty nifty.
2) J. Jonah Jameson
This will happen eventually, I’m sure, but come on. He’s the single most present and most entertaining villain of the franchise. His never-ending tirade against Spider-Man can be used as a great satire on media, and the tension between him and Peter is always fun to watch. I’m actually really okay with getting somebody other than J.K. Simmons to play him in the new series as I feel like that way of playing the character wouldn’t quite work right in this universe. I do love Simmons’ portrayal though.
1) Doctor Octopus
He’s the only Spider-Man villain I knew anything about before the first movie came out. He’s a genius but he’s egotistical to a fault and particularly violent. He’s pretty much the most memorable Spider-Man villain and seeing him again on the big screen would be fantastic. I’d love to see a newly designed, fully updated idea of what he’d be like, based more on how he was in the comics rather than being sympathetic like in Spider-Man 2. He’s perfect for big action and a great intellectual foe for Peter Parker to deal with.
